Spring is often the most dangerous season for motorcyclists

If you’re a motorcyclist, you likely kept your bike in the garage all winter long. But as we move into spring, you start to consider getting your bike out, tuning it up and taking it out for a ride. There’s often a major influx of motorcycles on the road at this time, as the weather warms and gets nicer.

However, this season is also one of the most dangerous for motorcyclists, and it’s important to be aware of your risks on the road. Why is this time of year so problematic?

Drivers aren’t looking for motorcycles

You may have seen advertisements or billboards reminding drivers to share the road with motorcycles. This is being done because they often forget about motorcycles over the winter and they simply are not looking for them. They are not aware.

Drivers will be less diligent about checking blindspots or making sure that there’s actually a gap when they’re turning left, rather than a small motorcycle that is partially hidden from view. That’s why it’s so important to be a defensive driver when you’re on your motorcycle, trying to anticipate the mistakes these people are going to make so that you can avoid an accident.

The weather can also play a role

Additionally, even though things are getting much warmer, the weather is not always ideal for motorcycles in the spring. The days are shorter, so you still have reduced visibility. Temperature changes can be drastic. Any bit of water on the road can make the surface slick and make it harder to stay in control of the bike.

Have you been injured in an accident?

If you’ve been involved in a motorcycle accident, perhaps caused by the negligence of another driver who wasn’t paying attention, it’s important to know what legal options you have. You may need to seek compensation for medical bills and related costs.
